5 Foods to Eat This Autumn
East Asian Medicine includes tailored nutritional recommendations based on the seasons and our individual uniqueness and needs.
There are correspondences to each season and fall is all about:
Breath
Slowing down
Harvest and community
Letting go and processing our emotions (especially sadness)
Another way to support ourselves is eating nourishing foods.
Check out these 5 foods to add this season!
1 . Baked Pears
Pears help keep your lungs moist. And we all know, in autumn, things tend to dry out — think scratchy throat and lingering coughs. Try this simple and delicious recipe.
2. Miso Soup and Other Warm Foods
Cold and raw foods take the body extra energy to digest. You’re asking your body to do a lot of warming up when you’re eating raw foods and it’s cooler outside. Go for soups, bone broth, baked and steamed veggies.
3. Garlic
Garlic has anti-viral properties which helps in the height of cold and flu season.
Try this spoonful of medicine when you feel a cold coming on:
Crush 1 clove of garlic
Add garlic to 1 teaspoon of honey
Put it down the hatch
4. Sour Foods
Sour foods from an East Asian Medicine perspective preserve fluids and moisten your body. Dry skin in the fall anyone?
Add these sour foods into your diet:
Pickles (I also love quick red onion pickles that you can make on the stovetop in minutes)
Vinegars
Citrus zest
Fermented foods like sauerkraut, miso (bonus: helps your digestion)
5. Chai Spices
These herbs are warming. You can add them to your cooking, too!
Cinnamon
Anise
Cardamom
Nutmeg
Ginger
Cloves
Tip: Simmer these spices in water on the stovetop for a cozy, delicious-smelling home!
